I happened to meet one of the most successful movie makers of India once, and I posed a genuine question that I had been having on my mind for a long time.
After watching some great world movies, I was wondering why India – in spite of having so much talent – cannot make a movie that can be appreciated by the world audiences.
“Please tell me, why don’t we Indians make movies that could be appreciated by world audiences?” I asked the famous writer/producer/director. He opened his drawer and took a photo of a Super Star (cannot name him here) who had acted in his movies that were major box office hits.
The filmmaker held the Super Stars’ picture in front of my eyes and said, “ye chutiye ko dekhne ke liye, chutiya public line me khada rehke ticket nikaalta hai. Un chutiyon ko mein kyon chutiya math banaun?” I kinda fainted.
English translation for the statement the successful filmmaker made – “to watch this asshole on the silver screen, assholes queue up to buy tickets. Why shouldn’t I exploit such assholes?”
