In today’s India, one sees a subtle but powerful project unfolding: an attempt by sections of Hindu society to reframe Hinduism in a way that makes it look structurally equivalent to Islam. The motivations are not difficult to understand. Islam, with its clear theological boundaries, strong sense of identity, and centralized practices, appears to project a strength and unity that fragmented Hindu traditions do not seem to match. Hindu activists, anxious about parity in the global religious marketplace, often think that unless Hinduism too acquires such a face, it will be left behind.
But this effort is flawed at its very root. Hinduism and Islam were born with different historical purposes, different temperaments, and different spiritual goals. Any attempt to mimic one in the image of the other either collapses in futility or empties Hinduism of its own essence.
The Structural DNA of Islam
Islam emerged in a specific historical moment of tribal Arabia. Its purpose was unifying: to bind fractured tribes into one community under a single God, a single Prophet, and a single Book. The power of Islam has always been its clarity and uniformity. Its theology resists ambiguity, its law offers order, and its rituals provide a shared rhythm across cultures and continents. In Islam, identity is inseparable from belief: to be Muslim is to submit (literally Islam means submission).
This makes Islam portable, consistent, and resilient. Whether in Mecca or Malaysia, the faith looks structurally the same.
The Fluid DNA of Hinduism
Hinduism, by contrast, did not arise to unify tribes or fix identities. Its origins are not in conquest or centralization but in an endlessly evolving search for truth. It is not a creed but a vast, pluralistic ecosystem of philosophies, practices, and ways of life. One can be a devout temple-goer or a radical philosopher questioning the very existence of God — and still be Hindu. Its strength lies precisely in its fluidity, its ability to absorb contradictions, and its refusal to reduce the human journey to a single formula.
At its essence, Hinduism is not about submission but about exploration. Not about a uniform order, but about a cosmic diversity in which truth has many forms.
The Danger of Mimicry
When modern Hindus try to impose a monolithic face on Hinduism — one scripture, one God, one code of conduct — they walk away from its essence. They trade in a tradition of multiplicity for a pale imitation of uniformity. Worse, they measure themselves by categories alien to their own history.
Islam does not suffer from lack of cohesion; Hinduism does not suffer from lack of diversity. Each tradition is whole within its own framework. But when Hinduism is made to compete with Islam on Islam’s terms — strength through sameness, unity through strict identity — it is bound to lose. Either the attempt collapses in failure (because Hinduism resists such straightjackets), or it succeeds by hollowing itself out (turning into something it never was).
A Different Kind of Strength
The challenge before Hindu society, then, is not to imitate Islam but to rediscover the value of its own DNA. Its resilience lies in the fact that it has no single gatekeeper, no one Book, no central authority that can be destroyed or co-opted. Its philosophical depth allows it to engage with science, skepticism, and spirituality without feeling threatened. Its plurality allows it to coexist with radical difference rather than demand uniform submission.
The future of Hinduism depends on whether it remembers this — or forgets it in the race to look like its neighbor.
