Hinduism is perhaps the only religion whose followers are still passionately devoted yet strangely disconnected from the very structure of their own faith. Ask ten Hindus what Hinduism is, and you will receive twelve different answers. Everyone has their own custom-made variant, carefully shaped to suit their lifestyle, comfort, and convenience — and yet each one is convinced that their version is the authentic one.
We proudly call Hinduism an “ever-evolving religion,” but let’s be honest: that phrase wasn’t born out of philosophical insight. It was invented out of cultural laziness. It was a convenient shield to justify walking away from rituals, discipline, tapasya, and the strict dharmic framework that once defined Hindu life. Today, every deviation becomes innovation, every shortcut becomes evolution, and every dilution becomes “modern spirituality.”
But how can a religion evolve when its very foundation — its Gods, its scriptures, its disciplines — remain unchanged? If Hinduism has truly “evolved,” then shouldn’t its deities and epics have evolved too? Shouldn’t the Mahabharata have a modern upgrade? If evolution was so fluid and free-flowing, then Sanjaya, the charioteer bestowed with divine sight, wouldn’t be using his psychic powers to narrate the Kurukshetra war to Dhritarashtra. He’d be livestreaming it on a smartphone, offering multiple camera angles, drone shots, and slow-motion replays.
This convenient idea of “religious evolution” says more about us than about Hinduism. We changed. We softened. We became selective. And then we rewrote the religion around our weaknesses.
Hindus today are quick to defend their faith on social media but don’t remember a single shloka. They debate aggressively but have never performed a single vrata. They call themselves “spiritual, not religious” as if that is a badge of higher intelligence, when in reality it often means they want the peace without the practice, the blessings without the discipline, the identity without the effort.
A religion doesn’t evolve just because its followers abandon structure. That’s not evolution — that’s erosion. True evolution requires ascension: deeper understanding, stronger practice, greater spiritual awareness. What we see today is the opposite. Rituals have vanished. Sadhanas have dwindled. Knowledge has become optional. Yet the confidence remains unshaken.
Ironically, Hinduism itself hasn’t changed one bit. It is we who changed, drifted, and then declared the drift as progress.
Until Hindus rediscover the seriousness of Dharma — not as an identity but as a discipline — the confusion will continue. And we will keep calling chaos “evolution” simply because it feels comfortable.
Hinduism doesn’t need to evolve. Its followers need to grow up.
